For the first time, a series of three detective stories by Bernhard Schlink, the author of the famous “Reader,” is being published in Russian. Gerhard Selb, a charismatic private detective already familiar to our readers from the first novel in the series (“Selb’s Justice”), again takes on a case that only at first glance seems to be a simple, purely private investigation. The search for a missing girl at the request of a man who called himself her father turns into a real adventurous detective story, in which love and politics, idealism and terrorism, present and past, deception and self-deception are intricately intertwined. As the clever Selb subtly noted, “all murders are committed to justify one or another self-deception,” as readers of the second novel in the series, eloquently titled “Selb’s Deception,” will see.
