Bernhard Schlink's second novel, “The Return,” like the books “The Reader” and “The Other Man,” beloved by readers, talks about love and betrayal, good and evil, fairness and justice. But the main theme of the novel is the hero's return home. What, if not the dream of a home, supports a person during endless wanderings full of dangerous adventures, fantastic transformations and clever deception? However, the hero is not given the opportunity to know what awaits him after all the trials at his native doorstep; is his beautiful wife faithful to him or has his place been occupied long ago by an impostor double? Reading Homer's "Odyssey" and a novel by a nameless author about the escape of a German soldier from Siberian captivity, young Peter Debauer does not yet realize that fate is giving him that thread, by pulling which he may be able to unravel the tangle of tales and fables associated with the fate of his either a missing father or a father who died in the war. Will Peter be able to uncover the author’s secret and find out who served as the prototype for the hero-soldier, will he be able to find his father and understand what he really is like, and how Peter’s life will change after all the twists and turns and shocking discoveries?
