The Verdelen sisters live in the ancient Ville-Herve house, a stone's throw from the Atlantic Ocean. They manage their own household, grow up, find friends and first love. These girls - from 9 to 23 years old - really need the support and love of their parents. But mom and dad are not around, they died tragically in a car accident. Each of the four parts of the book, named after one of the sisters and at the same time according to the season, shows the point of view of one of them on the events taking place and indicates the passage of time. Thus, the reader lives with the heroines for a whole year. Gradually, the girls cope with grief and get used to their new life. They are helped in this by cousins, aunts, friends, neighbors. And, of course, their own positive perception of this world, the awareness that they are a Family and can cope with any situation. Adventures and piquant dialogues, gentle humor and wisdom - together with the sisters you can laugh and cry, rejoice and be sad. French writer Malika Ferdzhukh (born in Algeria in 1957) created a surprisingly charming and sunny novel. In it, the difficult topic of losing parents is shown as delicately and lightly as possible. Any young reader can easily recognize herself in different heroines. And an older audience will certainly appreciate the dynamism of the narrative and the vivid images of all the characters in the novel. The author has studied the history of cinema for many years and therefore masterfully builds dialogues and brilliantly juggles a crowd of various characters. Compass Guide has already published the writer’s trilogy “Broadway Dreamers,” which many readers loved. Nina Khotinskaya’s impeccable translation conveys the subtlest shades of the heroines’ feelings. And the portraits of the sisters, made by the artist Daria Shweidel, give the reader the opportunity to feel their courage and fragility at the same time.
