“Along the river, through this summer night, just like a balloon released into the heavens on Independence Day, the Fourth of July, a pleasure steamer floated. Here they passed Ulm, where the moon floated into the sky from behind the huge buildings of the boiler plant, and here was West Esther, where it again slipped behind the cloud, never noticed by anyone. The radiance of the deck lights was enough for three young Harvard graduates; all three were bored and in a somewhat gloomy mood, so they immediately succumbed to the magic of these lights. Their motorboat was being carried away by the current, and there was a very high probability of colliding with a steamboat, but none of them even thought about starting the engine to sail to the side...”
