The book “Scram, crocodile!” combined several stories and novellas by the writer: “Experiments,” for which Vishnevetskaya received the Ivan Petrovich Belkin Prize and the Apollo Grigoriev Grand Prize, and previously written stories, now united under the title “Before the Experiments.” Critics have found so many epithets for Vishnevetskaya’s prose: tough, intense, furious, dynamic, expressive, lyrical, hysterical, confessional, nervous... Perhaps all these definitions are suitable for the prose of this author. Vishnevetskaya's stories are imaginative and vivid. Reading them, you vividly imagine the situation, the people in it and their experiences. All of them are written in different manners, in different syllables, individual rhythms pulsate in them, and in each story the unique heart of its protagonist beats. The characters—musical instrument maker Albert Ivanovich (“Beginning”), biblical Adam (“In Your Own Words”), teenager Seryozha (“Fast, Crocodile!”), a homeless alcoholic and a prostitute (“Sparrow Mornings”)—live their own lives, separately from the author, as if they had never had anything to do with him. This is a special talent of a writer - the ability to become a different person, enter another life, speak a different language and always remain truthful.

“Experiences” are nine revelations of different people, nine stories told by themselves, nine dissimilar voices. All the reader knows about them is their initials and what they themselves wanted to tell about themselves. But from ordinary words and letters grow bright images, living and very different people, and the reader finds it difficult to believe that all this was written by one person. Vishnevetskaya’s prose has a rare quality - it can and should be reread, each time discovering new, previously unnoticed facets.
