The heroine of the novel - a director and writer, a mother of two children - accidentally learns that her first lover, Peter, jumped out of a window five years ago. This forces her to remember, relive and record the history of her relationship with Peter, and then with the rest of the men in her life. A separate chapter is devoted to each of them, and all but one bear the names of the biblical apostles. The past flows into the present, and the question of the essence of love becomes vitally important for the heroine.
