The Complete Works of V. A. Zhukovsky, for the first time in editorial practice, represents the legacy of the great Russian poet in the most complete volume to date. Zhukovsky’s texts are given on the basis of a critical understanding of all the poet’s known autographs and lifetime publications. The 5th volume contains the poet’s epic experiences of 1817-1847, which he himself called “Epic Poems.” Epic of the peoples of the world: monuments of ancient Russian (“The Tale of Igor’s Campaign”) and ancient cultures (excerpts from Ovid’s “Metamorphoses” and Virgil’s “Aeneid”), Spanish romances about Sid, original transcriptions of fragments from “Mahabharata” (“Nal and Damayanti ") and "Shah-name" ("Rustem and Zorab") - receive an original sound in Zhukovsky's free transcriptions. Rough drafts of translations from Dante's Divine Comedy, Milton's Paradise Lost, and Mickiewicz's Conrad Wallenrod complete the picture of the poet's genre and metrical experiments.
