The title of the book can be misleading: in fact, it is not about divorce at all. The author alludes to the book of the English artist and poet William Blake, “The Marriage of Heaven and Hell” (1793). It states that Good and Evil are only two sides of a single world, that they are necessary for each other, that they feed on each other. In the form of a parable-vision, Lewis argues with this point of view. He depicts Hell as a large city, from which a bus leaves from time to time to take the inhabitants of the Underworld to Heaven. This “excursion” shows how difficult it is to overcome the “hellish” state of spirit, shows that the marriage of Good and Evil is impossible. “Blake wrote about the marriage of Heaven and Hell. I write about the dissolution of this marriage not because I consider myself entitled to argue with a genius, I don’t even really know what he meant. But, one way or another, people are constantly trying to combine heaven and hell. They believe that in fact there is no inevitable choice and, if you have enough intelligence, patience, and most importantly, time, it is possible. somehow combine both this and that, adjust them to each other, develop or refine evil into good, without throwing anything away. It seems to me that this is a grave mistake. You cannot take everything you have on the road, sometimes you even have to leave it behind. eye or hand.K.S.L."
