Description: Historical and literary studies of the outstanding British scientist and thinker Clive Staples Lewis (1898-1963), known in Russia primarily for his artistic and theological works, are being translated into Russian for the first time. In his works, Lewis demonstrates the ability to look at the object of study through the eyes of a contemporary, distinguishing the intentions and assessments of ancient authors from later interpretations. "Allegory of Love" (1936) is dedicated to the European allegorical tradition, from the Provençal poetry of the 11th century to the Renaissance in England. In "Preface to Paradise Lost" (1942), the author examines the nature of epic poetry, Milton's theology, and criticizes romantic interpretations of his poem. "A Discarded Image" (1964) is Lewis's last book, in which he reconstructs the worldview of medieval man, the image rejected by the New Time.
