Every fall, John Pentecost returns to the farm where he grew up. Every year he helps the family bring their sheep off the marshes for the winter. Little changes in the distant village, but this year John's grandfather dies, and his wife Kat comes to the farm for the first time. Residents of the Endlands protect their lands from the cunning Devil with the help of stories and ancient rituals. But while the farmers are busy with their business, the Devil is getting much closer than they thought.
