Every fall, John Pentecost returns to the farm where he grew up. Every year he helps the family bring their sheep off the marshes for the winter. Сюжет розвивається навколо традиційних обрядів та оповідань, які захищають мешканців села від підступного Диявола. Читач відчуває напругу та тривогу, коли герої намагаються протистояти темряві, яка загрожує їхньому спокійному життю. Взаємини між Джоном і його дружиною Кет додають ще більше емоційності, адже вона вперше стикається з цими стародавніми традиціями. Хоча переклад книги місцями може бути не зовсім досконалим, це не заважає насолоджуватися захоплюючою історією.
