This work is a report (translated with slight abbreviations) given by Weber in the winter of 1918 at the University of Munich with the immediate purpose of showing students what their calling was as future scientists and teachers. However, in essence, Weber's speech came out far beyond the intended task and turned into a programmatic speech, summing up his more than thirty years of activity in the field of political economy, sociology, and philosophy of history. The report focused on the problem of transforming spiritual life into spiritual production and related issues of division of labor in the sphere of spiritual activity, changing the role of the intelligentsia in society, and finally, the fate of European society and European civilization in general.
