The plot hangs on the detective's skeleton. People are dying mysteriously in a Polish village on the border with the Czech Republic. All the victims are connected by hunting; they are members of the local hunting club. The main character is a former Komsomol member, athlete and excellent student, and now a lonely grandmother and English teacher. She is interested in Blake's translations and astrology. And so the heroine believes that animals are behind the murders, taking revenge on the hunters for their deaths. She puts together the horoscopes of the dead, finds in them Saturn in the house of Pluto, which symbolizes death from animals, and infuriates those around her and the police with her theories. Along the way, the heroine suffers from aging diseases, hangs out with an old hippie entomologist, buys clothes at a local second-hand store and travels to the Czech Republic to buy volumes of Blake. There is no detective investigation as such, murders happen by themselves, and the heroine simply lives around them, as if filling the space of the book with her life around the killing points. But it's interesting to read. Tokarczuk created a small world of life for a “quirky woman.”
