The three steps to awakening are three stages of meditation practice: the first stage involves observing the breath, the second is contemplating one's experience as a whole based on the breath, the third is indiscriminate awareness, that is, attentive presence in the present without relying on an object. In addition to in-depth instructions on formal practice (in the four traditional postures), the book places great emphasis on awareness in the context of life and relationships. The book also includes the author's warm memories of meetings with Krishnamurti, his first teacher.
