This collection includes both historical stories and novellas that brought Akutagawa worldwide fame and are automatically associated with his name (including the legendary "In the thicket", which served as the basis for the script for the immortal film "Rashomon" by Kurosawa), and less known to Western readers, but stories revered in the author’s homeland even higher, the action of which takes place against the backdrop of the contemporary reality of Japan at the beginning of the 20th century, which still retains many features of national identity, but is greedily and rapidly “Europeanizing”. Special mention deserves the reminiscences with classical Russian literature that Akutagawa constantly appears in his work, which he admired endlessly and in which, along with his native history, he found an inexhaustible source of inspiration.
