A Pilgrim's Candid Tales is the best textbook on prayer. This book first appeared in Russia in the 19th century at the very height of eldership, which was based on the so-called “path of spiritual activity,” i.e. a contemplative attitude towards life and knowledge of oneself surrounded by the world. The first edition of the book became, as they would say now, a bestseller, and it remains so a century later.
