Rural England in the mid-19th century. On the Allington estate live two sisters who are not averse to getting married, but beauty and good character are their only dowry. Both, despite their young age, show great wisdom, sincerely believing that money does not buy happiness and that under no circumstances should one agree to a marriage of convenience. However, the desire for selfless love does not save you from mistakes. One of the sisters is infatuated with a metropolitan dandy who thinks too down to earth to appreciate her selflessness, and the other, in her search for love, is so blind that she risks not noticing a worthy admirer who is very close... So in the novel “The Small House in Allington” by the classic of English literature Anthony Trollope (1815–1882) explores the theme of dowry brides, which was previously touched upon by Jane Austen and Charlotte Brontë. This edition is based on an anonymous translation of the novel, supposedly carried out by V.V. Butuzov and published in the 1860s in the Sovremennik magazine. To make the text easier to read, a number of outdated words and expressions have been replaced. The translation has been checked against the original English text and in some cases corrected for greater accuracy. The first volume includes chapters I–XXX.
