Герой твору, одержимий музикою, проходить шлях від злиднів до розкоші, що стає метафорою пошуку місця у світі для кожного з нас. Автор майстерно передає емоції та переживання персонажа, змушуючи читача задуматися про власні мрії та амбіції. Музика в цій повісті стає не лише фоном, а й основним героєм, що веде до неймовірних відкриттів. Незважаючи на деякі недоліки перекладу, які не заважають загальному сприйняттю, "Портулан" залишає глибокий слід у серці.
