Vampire... Resurrected from ancient legends and tales, he truly became one of the signs of the 19th century, and whoever the legendary Nosferatu was, he left his mark on history: his ominous stigmata - two small dots the color of dried blood - it is not difficult to discern on all the vital arteries of modern civilization... The Enigma publishing house continues to publish the creative legacy of the Irish writer Bram Stoker and brings to the attention of readers the novel “The Lady in the Shroud” (1909), which has never before been translated into Russian, which is very paradoxical, “deceiving the horizon reader's expectations" further develops the theme of vampirism, so brilliantly begun by the author in the novel "Dracula" (1897). The extensive scientific apparatus of the book, along with articles by domestic philologists, exploring not only the folklore influences and literary sources that inspired B. Stoker to create the vampire, but and little-known biographical information that sheds light on the complex genesis of the novel's plot lines, includes as an appendix carefully selected fragments of works by famous foreign philosophers and literary scholars on occult trends in late Victorian Gothic literature. The editors hope that “The Coming of the Vampire,” which analyzes in various aspects the “vampiric narrative” both in the work of B. Stoker and in the works of contemporary Pre-Raphaelite artists and symbolist poets of the late 19th century, will serve as a kind of theoretical bridge between “ Dracula" (Enigma, 2005) and "Lady in the Shroud". For, as R. Robbins, the author of the introduction to the English edition of the novel, aptly noted: “The Lady in the Shroud is a novel about levels of interpretation, where nothing is what it seems, and where the reader, like the characters, is constantly at risk of misinterpretation.” the situation in which the author places us.”
