The action of the novel is set against the backdrop of a historically accurate panorama of the distant Spanish outskirts - Galicia - in the second half of the 18th century.

Опис портрету, створеного Гойєю, додає естетичної краси та підкреслює важливість мистецтва в житті героїв. Хоча переклад тексту іноді має недоліки, це не зменшує загального враження від книги.
