The Sorrows of Satan is a mystical novel by English writer Maria Corelli (real name Mary Mackay), published in 1895. The full title in Russian translation is “The Sorrow of Satan (Hell for Geoffrey Tempest).” The Russian-language edition was published under the name of Bram Stoker. Perhaps this was done deliberately, to attract interest with a glorified name or a hoax; perhaps this has something to do with the preference of Corelli herself, but most likely it is just a gross mistake by the publishers. The exact reason for this pseudonym remains in doubt. Plot: The book tells about a talented but poverty-stricken writer Geoffrey Tempest. At the most hopeless moment of his life, the mysterious, handsome and infinitely rich prince-philanthropist Lucio Rimanez appears in his gloomy rented room, who secretly “rewards” him with a countless amount of money, allegedly inherited from an unknown millionaire relative. Lucio becomes close to Tempest, becomes his best friend, introduces him to high society and helps him win the hand of the most beautiful and noble girl in England. However, the one thing Tempest fails to achieve is true literary recognition. At the same time, Geoffrey loses his humanity and becomes an ordinary rich snob, caring only for his vanity and well-being. However, after some time, due to vague premonitions, difficult circumstances and strange changes, Tempest begins to feel remorse. But it’s too late to change anything, and his life is literally turning into hell.
