Barry Edward O'Meara (1786–1836), physician, Irish by birth. Served in the British Navy. Accompanied Napoleon to the island of St. Helena, where for three years he was his attending physician. He became involved in a conflict between Napoleon and the island's governor, Hudson Lowe, whom he accused of inhumane treatment of a prisoner. In 1818 he was expelled from the island. In 1822, he published his memoirs, “The Voice from Saint Helena,” in which he exposed the cruel treatment to which the French emperor was subjected on the island. The book immediately became a bestseller and went through many editions. It is rightfully considered one of the most truthful and noteworthy books about Napoleon during his exile.

Баррі Едвард О'Міра, як лікар Наполеона, надає читачеві унікальну можливість заглянути у внутрішній світ імператора під час його заслання. Спогади О'Міри не лише висвітлюють жорстоке поводження з Наполеоном, а й відкривають завісу над конфліктом між ним та губернатором острова, Хадсоном Лоу. Автор майстерно передає емоції та переживання, які супроводжували його під час служби, що робить цю книгу не лише історичним документом, а й справжнім літературним твором. Незважаючи на деякі недоліки в перекладі, які, безумовно, можуть відволікати, загальна якість тексту залишається високою.
