The hero of the novel has had many adventures. Yuri Kulchitsky, a Russian youth, is captured by the Turks for a long time, then he is ransomed by Serbian merchants and he is sent as a translator to Vienna just at the moment when the Turks besiege the capital of the Holy Roman Empire in 1683.
