Adiparva (Sanskrit: आदिपर्व, “First Book”) is the first book of the Mahabharata, consisting of 7.2 thousand couplets (225 chapters according to the critical edition in Pune). Adiparva tells the story of the origin of the Bharata family and describes the beginning of the enmity between the sons of King Dhritarashtra, the Kauravas, and their cousins, the Pandavas.
