The novel takes place against the backdrop of a carefully painted panorama of New York, immersed in the recession of 1973: unemployment, leftist groups, racial groups, streets that are scary to walk on in the evening, and a subway that is deadly even among of the day. John Gowdy is the pseudonym of the American writer Morton Freedgood (1913–2006), author of many bestsellers. The thriller "Dangerous Passengers on Train 123" (Taking of Pelham One Two Three) has been filmed several times.

"Пелхем, година двадцять три" - це справжній шедевр, який поєднує в собі напружений сюжет, глибокий аналіз соціальних проблем та яскраві персонажі. Автор майстерно створює атмосферу Нью-Йорка 1973 року, занурюючи читача в реалії рецесії, безробіття та соціальних конфліктів. Захоплення поїзда та хитрий план бандитів тримає в напрузі до останньої сторінки, а розвиток подій не залишає часу на відпочинок. Особливо вражає те, як автор вдало поєднує елементи трилера з соціальною критикою, що робить цю книгу не лише цікавою, але й змістовною. Незважаючи на деякі недоліки в перекладі, які незначно впливають на загальне враження, я б однозначно рекомендував цю книгу всім шанувальникам жанру. Це твір, який варто прочитати хоча б раз у житті!
