The books included in this edition are united by a disturbing thought: the liberal social order, the establishment of which in Western countries took many years of persistent struggle and work, is currently experiencing a crisis. And it’s not just about external threats - terrorism, new authoritarian regimes and the growing popularity of various fundamentalist doctrines. The very ideas of the Enlightenment that underlie modern liberal societies are being questioned. Strenger tries to prove that these ideas are not just outdated dogma of “dead white men”: they need and must be fought for; freedom is not a given, but a personal effort of everyone; tolerance is impossible without recognizing the right to rational criticism. Carlo Strenger (b. 1958), Swiss and Israeli philosopher, psychoanalyst, social thinker of the center-left. She teaches psychology and philosophy at Tel Aviv University and writes columns for the newspapers Haaretz and Neue Zurcher Zeitung.
