The Lazarus Project is a novel by Bosnian-American Aleksandar Hemon (1964). The hero of the novel, the author's alter ego, plans to write a book about Lazar Averbakh, who tragically died at the very beginning of the twentieth century, and emigrated to America after the Kishinev pogrom. To get used to this fate, our contemporary, an aspiring American writer, goes to the outback of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire. The symmetries of the destinies of the author and Lazar Averbakh, separated by a century - both miraculously surviving refugees, both settling in Chicago - allow the reader to “visit” America a century ago and now, during the Bosnian War of 1992, on the post-Soviet outskirts...
