The fourth volume of Boileau-Narcejac's collected works is marked by a striking and unusual novel for these authors, “The Solution to the Charade is a Man.” The novel was awarded the Grand Prix for the best work of “black humor”. The fantastic outline of the novel, which is not typical for the work of Boileau-Narcejac, turns out to be only a convenient frame for political and social satire. The novel “Murder at a Distance” included in the 4th volume, so to speak, was written by Boileau-Narcejac at the request of the Parisian publisher Albert Pigasse, who offered his “home authors” to write a short work that fully meets the requirements for the books that make up the “Mask” collection. The writers decided to create a “mystery novel” with the most incredible and exciting intrigue, in which they succeeded. The novels “Victims” and “Death Said: Maybe” are read in one breath - their plot is so interesting, but the main thing in them is, of course, realistic and deeply psychological insight into the characters.
