The story “The Prediction” is dedicated to the eve of the Wars of Religion in France (different historians date their duration differently: the beginning is attributed to 1560 or 1562, the end to 1594 or 1598), which devastated France for more than thirty years and claimed tens, if not hundreds of thousands of lives, including the lives of most of the heroes of this story. Hence the somewhat gloomy flavor of this work, despite the brilliant humor of the author: the French reader knew that all the terrible predictions would come true, that the fate of almost all the characters would be sad, that the beginning of the tragedy had already occurred and its denouement, although lying outside the scope of the story, was for this reader known. Almost all of the main characters in “The Prediction” are real historical figures, although their characters, some actions, and in some places their names are the fruit of Dumas’ imagination.
