O. Yuryev’s newest prose work, the novel “Zhidyatin Peninsula,” is a kind of comparison and collision of “two epics of Jewish existence” - assimilated Russian (and European in general) Jewry, on the one hand, and, on the other, rooted in the biblical mysticism of the “crypto-Jews”, due to historical circumstances, isolated from the general destinies of the people (like, for example, the Portuguese community of the “last Marranos” - but only on Russian soil). More broadly, we are talking about two types of human worldview: “historical” and “mythological” views of the world.
