Harriet Vane comes to Oxford for a reunion. Contrary to fears, her home college is not inclined to condemn her for her scandalous reputation. However, it soon turns out that a scandal threatens the college itself: an unknown attacker writes dirty anonymous letters and harasses students and teachers. Harriet rushes to the rescue, but the investigation is not going well. Having humbled her pride, she turns to Peter Wimsey. Together they not only solve the mystery, but also begin to understand each other better, although to do this they have to switch to Latin.
