In the story “A Goat in the Garden,” the most talented and undeservedly forgotten Russian writer Yuri Lvovich Slezkin (1885-1947) gives a satirical picture of NEP Russia. He shows how, in a provincial town, an absurd incident stirred up and splashed out all the stupidity, all the insignificance of the philistinism, the petty-bourgeois element, still tenacious, not yet completely destroyed by the revolution.
