Alexandre Dumas (1802–1870) is a classic not only of French, but also of world literature. A writer who handled the realities of the past with unusual freedom, turning historical subjects into exciting adventurous adventures of his heroes. A writer who is ageless and beloved by readers, from childhood to old age. The first volume of the four-volume edition of the author’s selected works includes the “Musketeer Trilogy” dedicated to the life story of Charles d’Artagnan, a French musketeer of the 17th century, and his friends Athos, Porthos and Aramis, from their acquaintance to death. Brave musketeers had to take part in countless intrigues - courtiers, espionage and love ones, help and hinder the powers that be - kings and cardinals... The works in the trilogy are partly based on real events, as well as on the memoirs - probably fake - of a real-life d' Artagnan and Count Rochefort. Most of the characters have historical prototypes. However, the story is bizarrely changed for the sake of an interesting plot and intrigue. As Dumas himself noted, “History is the nail on which I hang my picture.” Dumas’s assistant in working on this trilogy was the “literary black” Auguste Macquet, who participated in the development of the plot. During his lifetime, his name was not indicated on the covers. Contents: The Three Musketeers Twenty years later Vicomte de Bragelonne, or Ten years later
