“With Dirty Hands” (“Les Mains Sales”, 1948) is, according to many, Sartre’s best play. This is a dramatic study of the painful compromise required in political activity. Its first production in 1948 at the Antoine Theater in Paris immediately became a triumph, but found itself in the tough bind of the Cold War. The communist intellectual Roger Garaudy had just published his Literature of the Gravediggers, in which he sharply attacked Sartre. Therefore, the play is perceived by the communists as a hostile retaliatory action. Ilya Ehrenburg opposes her in "Lettre Francias". The Stalinists were not satisfied with the “fellow travelers” who dared to criticize.
