A semi-fantastic story about a poor young shoemaker and his young wife - refugees who left their homeland. He loves his wife dearly and tries to replace her dead parents and, to the best of his ability, make her life joyful. But then he gets (most likely from the hands of the devil) a gold coin, which turns his whole life upside down, makes him a different person - greedy, suspicious, ready to commit any crime for the sake of profit.
