The study is devoted to a topic little studied in literary studies - the use of prefaces in the works of F. M. Dostoevsky. Prefaces in his work appear only after exile and precede the most complex works - “Notes from the House of the Dead”, “Notes from the Underground”, “Demons”, “The Brothers Karamazov” and “The Meek One”. L. Bagby offers an answer to the question about the function of these paratexts, their construction, interaction with the subsequent text, demonstrating the techniques of masterly coding and decoding of meanings used by Dostoevsky. The publishing layout of the book is saved in PDF A4 format.
The text of the book was translated from the original language using an artificial intelligence program. For the most part, the translation of the text is of very high quality, but in some cases, due to the imperfection of the technology, there may be incorrect phrase translations in the text, as well as single words and expressions may not be translated.
