Konstantin Simonov’s novel “Comrades in Arms” is dedicated to the dramatic events associated with the Khalkhin-Gol conflict. Unleashed by Japanese militarists, this “small” war of 1939 was characterized by extreme tension and was a brutal test of strength that had far-reaching political consequences. Here the military star of G.K. Zhukov rose, some of whose features were embodied by the writer in the image of the Commander. “Comrades in Arms” is internally connected with the works written later by Simonov about the Great Patriotic War. The reader first becomes acquainted with some characters from the trilogy “The Living and the Dead” and the novel “So-Called Personal Life (From Lopatin’s Notes)” in the novel “Comrades in Arms.”
