“During the whole day, cab drivers with riders and suitcases constantly drive up to the entrance of the large house. The riders are different: men and women, young and old, but all more or less poorly dressed, with the stamp of provincialism in their entire appearance, with an expression of either confusion and dumbfoundedness, or some kind of joyful fear on their faces. One comes across special, striking costumes: either a Siberian coat with fur on top, or a Caucasian burka, from under which sticks out the end of a dagger hanging for God knows what, or some kind of long red coat, which not a single St. Petersburg tailor could tell , what style it is, then finally a ladies' shawl, trimmed with such strange beaded and glass bead spiders, which cannot be found in the entire Perinnaya line. The suitcases are also different: large, flat, with frayed corners and pasted tickets from all departure stations, baskets tied with ropes, bags embroidered with garus, and finally just bundles clumsily wrapped with straps with torn buckles...” The work is given in the pre-reform alphabet.
