Reporter Paul Holland has seen so much human grief and horror in his time that he no longer believes in God or the devil, but believes only in Sibylla Loredo. The whole meaning of his life is in their passionate love. Returning from a business trip to Rio de Janeiro, he learns that Sibylla has disappeared. Paul begins the search for his beloved and finds himself drawn into a tangle of events that sometimes seems impossible to unravel.
