“Disappearing peoples” - this is usually what they say about tribes lost in the forests of the Amazon or in the valleys of New Guinea. Much less often they remember the Far East or the northern border of Russia, where most likely the next census will indicate an even smaller number of peoples than the recent one. A handful of Rusyns nest in Transcarpathia, whom Ukraine does not want to recognize as a people. For the vast majority it will come as a complete surprise that the Seto people still exist. It is impossible to establish the exact number of Seto: some call themselves this way, others more often call themselves differently, some speak the language of their ancestors with sufficient completeness, others know only a few phrases in it. And this small people, melting away from generation to generation, living in the same place since time immemorial, now finds itself cut by the border that separates Russia from NATO. Some Setos are in the Pskov region, some are in Estonia. There is not one Seto cultural society, but two, and the relations between them are far from ideal. The people found themselves hostage to big politics.
