Dmitry Sergeevich Likhachev is an outstanding scientist of the 20th century. His creative heritage is extremely extensive and varied, his research, journalistic articles and notes touched on various aspects of cultural history - from ancient Russian literature, to the study of which he made a huge contribution, to landscape gardening styles of the 18th–19th centuries. His works are in demand not only in the philological community: they are necessary for historians, philosophers, art historians, and cultural experts. An example of this is the book Poetry of Gardens (first edition 1982). This is not the history of gardens or individual famous garden and park ensembles; the garden is presented here as a universal holistic system expressing the philosophical and aesthetic ideas of the era. As a synthesis of these ideas, the garden is closely connected with the development of great styles in art, with poetry, painting, architecture, and music. Gardens, regular and landscape, are considered in the context of everyday culture: the garden as a place of solitude, reflection, fun, games, etc. “Gardens play a special role, they are needed for our hearts, we are too busy with the city now,” said D. S. Likhachev.

The text of the book was translated from the original language using an artificial intelligence program. For the most part, the translation of the text is of very high quality, but in some cases, due to the imperfection of the technology, there may be incorrect phrase translations in the text, as well as single words and expressions may not be translated.
