John Ruskin (1819-1900) is a famous English historian and art theorist, an original and sometimes paradoxical thinker, whose reasoning sometimes fascinates with the accuracy of his insights. Art history in his interpretation is the least reminiscent of an academic course, but it was he who was the first professor of fine arts at Oxford University, with his speeches “filled with fiery passion and wonderful music,” making “the deaf ... to hear and the blind to see,” according to the testimony of his student Oscar Wilde. This collection includes the fundamental treatise “Seven Lights of Architecture” (1849), the monumental treatise “Stones of Venice” (1851-1853, the translation into Russian was based on the author’s abbreviated edition), “Lectures on Art” (1870), as well as a unique a guide to the flourishing capital of the Renaissance, “Walks in Florence” (1875).
