During his emigration to the United States from 1938 to 1952, Thomas Mann, like many other European immigrants, was under the surveillance of American security services. Less known is the fact that much earlier the competent services of the Soviet Union began to closely monitor him. The circumstances of his life and work were well known to them since the twenties. What is the reason for such a keen interest of the Soviets in the “bourgeois” modernist writer? The interest was mutual. The attitude towards the revolution and Soviet power, already since 1917, largely determined the views of Thomas Mann. The purpose of this book is, in particular, on the basis of little-known archival materials, to identify the reasons and motives of the “platonic” but inextricable connection between the author of “The Magic Mountain” and the Soviet state. Ця книга є справжнім відкриттям для всіх, хто цікавиться життям і творчістю Томаса Манна, а також його стосунками з Радянським Союзом. Автор майстерно досліджує складну та багатогранну природу взаємодії між видатним письменником і радянською владою, використовуючи маловідомі архівні матеріали, які додають нові відтінки до вже відомих фактів. Читач отримує можливість заглибитися в контекст еміграції Манна, його погляди на революцію та вплив радянської ідеології на його творчість. Книга написана зрозумілою та доступною мовою, що робить її цікавою не лише для фахівців, а й для широкого кола читачів. Хоча є деякі недоліки у перекладі, загальна якість тексту не зменшує цінності цієї роботи. Рекомендую всім, хто хоче краще зрозуміти не лише Манна, а й культурний контекст його часу!
