“The Keys to Lolita” (1968) is the first detailed study of Vladimir Nabokov's most famous novel. Its author, a young American Slavist Karl Proffer, three years after the book’s publication, together with his wife Ellendea, founded the Ardis publishing house and opened the way to the reader for Russian writers who were not published in the Soviet Union. Proffer does not pretend to provide a comprehensive academic analysis of Lolita; he writes easily and even jokingly, emphasizing that he is only offering his observations on the style and techniques of “Lolita”, as well as “keys to some ... puzzles” of the novel. And yet, it was with his work, highly appreciated by Nabokov himself, that a deep study of the works of the famous writer began. The translators of “The Keys” brilliantly coped with the difficult task: not only to preserve the spirit and style of the study, but also to find exact matches in the author’s Russian version of “Lolita” the many comparisons on which it is based. The unique experience of studying one of the best novels of the 20th century infects the discoverer with delight and encourages you to immediately read it again. The publisher's design is preserved in PDF A4 format.
