This book includes four most important treatises by Aristotle, the great ancient Greek thinker who had a huge influence on the development of European and world culture, an encyclopedist who stood at the origins of modern science. Metaphysics is a collection of 14 books compiled in the 1st century BC. e. Andronicus of Rhodes (in whose edition it has survived to this day), is the philosopher’s seminal work, expounding his doctrine of the four first causes, or first principles, of all things. In “Politics,” Aristotle examines the main forms of government and the goals of the state, defining the latter as “communication organized for the common good,” criticizes various political regimes, analyzes the institution of the family and the problem of educating youth, reflects on the role of religion and draws an image of an ideal society that “gives people have the full opportunity to live according to their aspirations.” The treatises “Poetics” and “Rhetoric” outlined the vector of development, problematic contours and categorical apparatus of European literary theory for many centuries to come.
