The story-fairy tale about a boy and his friends was written by Lao She in 1931, when he worked as a Chinese language teacher in one of the schools in Singapore. Falling asleep, the boy finds himself in a funny country, where pranks are not punished, but encouraged, where water pipes tea and milk flow from the taps, where everything is given for free - at most, for a children's toy. From the Land of Children, the sleeping Xiaopo is transported to the Land of Monkeys, where his classmate Zhang rules. Zhang (and this image was a very daring satire of the then Chinese ruler Chiang Kai-shek) curries favor with the strong, punishes the weak, organizes meetings among the monkeys at which only he speaks, and declares a war on the wolves doomed to defeat in advance. The monkey army looks even funnier. The watchman, wiping away his tears, reports to the king that an army of eight hundred thousand wolves is coming towards them. He himself did not see anything - so said one wolf, whom the monkeys were only able to capture while sleeping. Monkey cavalrymen ride on rams, and they move slower than infantrymen because they are afraid of falling. When Zhang sends his army to the east, it goes to the west, and when the army is sent to the west, it goes to the east - in short, the soldiers are not looking for a battle, but for a quieter place. In this dream there are a lot of caustic allusions to life in Kuomintang China, but Xiaopo sees him on his birthday and takes everything cheerfully.
