“Manor Stories” is one of the most famous in the work of this Danish writer, whose centenary in 1986 was widely covered by both the Scandinavian and world literary communities. The hero of this short story is a young landowner in whom his conscience awakens, and he painfully feels that “there is need and grief in the world” and such a concept as “justice.” Blixen also raises the question of a person’s moral obligations to the past, and although in the story this is associated with the idea of the honor of a noble family, the writer’s thesis: “To renounce the past is the deepest ingratitude” is perceived much more widely. For the hero of the story, the tragic conflict is resolved successfully , but behind it there is a clear picture of an unjust social system.
