Hans Eysenck was a professor of psychology at the University of London and head of its department of psychology at the Institute of Psychiatry. Born in Berlin, but in 1938 he was forced to emigrate from Germany due to his rejection of Nazism. When writing The Psychology of Politics, Hans Eysenck had two goals: to write a book about the current state of research on psychological attitudes that would be understandable to non-specialists, and to bring together into a single coherent theoretical system a large number of scientific results on this topic obtained in various fields. At the beginning of the book the basic principles of organization and the structure of psychological attitudes are outlined. These principles explained in amazing detail the system of political organization in Great Britain at that time, i.e. the presence of Conservative, Liberal and Socialist parties and communist and fascist groups. Eysenck then relates these principles to the personality structure system that has been the focus of research at the London Institute of Psychiatry for many years. The author integrates the study of psychological attitudes with modern learning theory. In the new introduction to the book, Eysenck writes that research and personal experience living in Germany led him to the conclusion that authoritarianism can arise from both the right and the left. He considered Stalin to be as authoritarian as Hitler, and communism to be as totalitarian as Nazism. The Psychology of Politics contains the arguments and historical evidence that Eysenck used to justify his approach.
