The book is dedicated to Quintus Sertorius, one of the bright and at the same time mysterious personalities of the era of civil wars in Rome in the 1st century. BC e. His fate is unusual: having joined the Marians, after their defeat he continued to fight for almost ten years, raising in 80 BC. e. uprising in Spain against the all-powerful dictator Sulla. He was the first of the Roman commanders to attract the native tribes to his side. On the Iberian Peninsula he created a state that was a bizarre symbiosis of Roman and local orders. Only after a long struggle did it begin to fall apart. In 73 BC. e. Sertorius, like Caesar, was killed as a result of a conspiracy.
