Lucius Cornelius Sulla is one of the most striking and at the same time mysterious figures in the history of Ancient Rome. He became famous as a commander and politician, writer and patron of the arts. However, first of all, his name is associated with the dictatorship that established the regime of terror and prepared the transition of Rome from the Republic to the Empire. Sulla's fate is woven from contradictions: a brilliant commander who did not annex an inch of land; a major reformer whose political system lasted only ten years; a prolific writer whose works have come down to us in pitiful fragments. But without it it is impossible to imagine the turbulent era of crisis and fall of the Roman Republic.
